In October 2024 we had our first in-school Spelling Bee (spelling bee) at Treehouse Academy. This was preceded by an internal class preliminary decision in which 100 of the 250 previously known words were asked in writing. The top 6 in each class qualified for the final. There, the finalists had to spell the words out loud in front of all the students and parents. Of course many children were super nervous, but we were surprised by the very high quality. The difficulty with the Spelling Bee is that if you make a mistake you are eliminated immediately; there are no second chances. For the second graders, for example, after 10 rounds of evaluation there were still 3 students, so we had to ask more difficult, sometimes unknown and unpracticed words in order to come to a decision. The other classes also impressed with their high level of spelling confidence. The highlight was undoubtedly provided by two 6th grade students. The two pushed each other to peak performance and even after 10 extra rounds there was still no winner, so the jury decided to declare both winners. Overall, it was a very good, fair competition and we are already looking forward to next year, when the winners will qualify for the city competition.
